雅思考试分为两个组别，学术组（Academic）及一般暨移民组（General Training）。学术组适合前往英语系国家求学者，考试内容有部分偏重学术技巧；一般暨移民组则计划到海外工作或是到移民者。考试内容涵盖听，说，读，写四个项目，测验时间约需3个小时，包含15分钟的口说测验。考试被区分为两个阶段，第一个阶段三项的笔试，第二个阶段则是口说测验。通常口试会被安排在笔试当天的下午或是隔天受测。
- 多种口音和写作风格在书面上出现，其目的是为了减少考试对语言学上的偏爱。考试注重的是国际英语，在听力测试中表现的最为显著，听力测试的口音主要包括了英国口音、美国口音、澳洲口音及新西兰口音等类型，相比之下托福 （TOFEL）则更注重北美英语。因此更多的人和组织认为雅思比托福更具有权威性。
